About

Welcome to the Outdoor & Sports Industry Club

Our mission is to prepare Foster MBA students for careers in the outdoor and sports industries by:

  1. Providing opportunities to engage and interact with industry professionals

  2. Establishing the value of an MBA to stakeholders in the industry.

Over this past year, we held events across the Outdoor Industry — including Outdoor Research, Cascade Designs, and Outdoor Retailer — and the Sports Industry, including Brooks, Nike, and the UW Athletic Department.

We also serve as a social outlet for outdoorists and sports fans, holding happy hours, hiking/skiing in the Cascades, and attending various sporting events.

Leadership
ETHAN FLORY PRESIDENT A California native, Ethan quickly discovered that the West Coast is indeed the best coast after serving four years in the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program in Charleston, SC. Throughout his life, Ethan’s been inspired by the way time outdoors and an active lifestyle can change people for the better (himself included). Ethan is excited to start a career in the outdoor industry after finishing his MBA and is passionate about bridging the gap between MBA talent and the outdoor industry. He’s also an avid trail runner, backpacker, snowboarder, and fledgling climber. You’ll probably find him out for a hike with his wife and two adventure dogs or kicking back for a pint and burrito in Ballard afterwards.

His specific MBA interests include sports/outdoor brand management, marketing, and strategy. When Ben isn’t in Paccar, you can probably catch him on a trail somewhere outside Seattle. A native of the flat pastures of Texas, Ben loves exploring the unique nature Washington has to offer and loves nothing more than setting up his hammock at the top of a hike and reading a good book.

ALANA MCGEE VICE PRESIDENT A Native to the Salish Sea, Alana grew up with a profound love of the mountains, forests, and oceans of the Pacific Northwest. From skiing, paddling the waterways of the PNW & Hawaii (one of her favorites), to camping, hiking, fishing, and trail running with her dogs, being outside anywhere makes Alana happy. You can often find her guiding truffle-hunting culinary adventures as part of her company, Truffle Dog Co., exploring the forests of the Pacific Northwest, or growing veggies in her garden. When asked about people she admired in business or life during her entrance interview for Foster, Alana’s answer was Yvonne Chouinard. She plans to meet him someday.

MEGAN BACKER VICE PRESIDENT Megan grew up and went to college in the great state of Iowa and then lived in Chicago for nine years before moving out to the PNW. While in Chicago, she spent most of her free time playing flag football, softball, and volleyball in between her annual hiking vacations around the world, including the Inca Trail and the trek around Mount Blanc. Megan has lived in Seattle for the past three years and takes advantage of finally living near the mountains—hiking and backpacking in the warm months and snowshoeing in the winter—while also continuing her involvement with intramural sports. She hopes to hike through Patagonia for her next big adventure!
